格言警句和諺語是歷代政治家、思想家、哲學(xué)家、科學(xué)家及知名人士的思想精華，它簡(jiǎn)潔概括、內(nèi)容深邃、發(fā)人深省；同時(shí)它也是一種世界文化遺產(chǎn)，傳承著古老而悠遠(yuǎn)的文化，經(jīng)歷了時(shí)間的檢驗(yàn)。它以特有的言簡(jiǎn)意賅、雋永清新、富有哲理，千百年來為人們所傳誦。英語格言警句和諺語作為一種傳統(tǒng)文化載體，不僅是人類智慧的結(jié)晶，而且是人類思想的凈化劑。學(xué)習(xí)英語格言警句和諺語不僅能學(xué)到純正地道的英語表達(dá)方式，也能從中獲得一定的人生啟迪。
筆者在教授《新編實(shí)用英語讀寫教程》（浙大出版社）第九單元Myths and Legends（神話傳奇）中頗有感受，每個(gè)寓言故事富有深刻的寓意，通過角色的扮演，使學(xué)生在課堂教學(xué)中占主體地位，學(xué)生的積極性比以往有了明顯的提高。由此，利用英語格言警句和諺語教學(xué)是一種新的嘗試，通過“寓文化素質(zhì)教育于語言教學(xué)之中”的理念來培養(yǎng)和挖掘?qū)W生的內(nèi)在潛能，培養(yǎng)學(xué)生理解能力、表達(dá)能力、欣賞能力和運(yùn)用知識(shí)的能力。
一、激發(fā)學(xué)生學(xué)習(xí)英語的興趣
“興趣是最好的老師”，有了興趣，學(xué)習(xí)就會(huì)事半功倍。而興趣不是與生俱來的，需要培養(yǎng)，學(xué)生學(xué)習(xí)的積極性是需要教師去激發(fā)的，因而教學(xué)方法的靈活運(yùn)用是必不可少的。教師應(yīng)該認(rèn)真考慮學(xué)生的興趣需要，找到學(xué)生的興趣出發(fā)點(diǎn)，從而讓英語學(xué)習(xí)成為一種有樂趣和找樂趣的開創(chuàng)性學(xué)習(xí)。語言學(xué)習(xí)的規(guī)律告訴我們，反復(fù)誦讀優(yōu)美的文句能激發(fā)學(xué)習(xí)的興奮點(diǎn)，是語言學(xué)習(xí)不可或缺的環(huán)節(jié)。
在以往枯燥的語言點(diǎn)的講解過程中，學(xué)生很容易失去對(duì)英語的興趣，如果結(jié)合一些英語格言警句和諺語教學(xué)，那么就容易調(diào)動(dòng)學(xué)生們的課堂積極性，能使枯燥的語言點(diǎn)講授變得生動(dòng)有趣，也能使枯燥的語言點(diǎn)便于理解。例如在第七單元教學(xué)“where there be….；there be…”的句型時(shí)，就可以利用Where there is a will，there is a way.（有志者事竟成）這個(gè)諺語作為經(jīng)典例子展開反復(fù)訓(xùn)練，有利于學(xué)生積累較多的句型，供他們自己舉一反三、模仿、套用和改寫。如：Where there is air，there is life./Where there are difficulties，there are ways to get over them./Where there is opposition，there are rebellions./Where there are women，there are jealousy and suspicion.
二、利用英語格言警句和諺語教學(xué)有助于鞏固和復(fù)習(xí)知識(shí)點(diǎn)
格言警句和諺語的語法結(jié)構(gòu)正確、規(guī)范而嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)，教師可以結(jié)合與教材相關(guān)的語法知識(shí)，每天精選幾句英語格言警句或諺語提供給學(xué)生，幫助學(xué)生鞏固已學(xué)的語言知識(shí)。
例如，在講解“trouble”這一單詞時(shí)，要講解trouble的意思和兩種詞性時(shí)，可以利用“Don’t trouble trouble，until trouble troubles you.”（車到山前必有路），這有助于學(xué)生掌握trouble的兩個(gè)不同詞性。
在對(duì)cry one’s heart/eyes out的詞組講解時(shí)，根據(jù)諺語It’s no use crying over spilt milk（覆水難收），可以拓展到全國英語應(yīng)用能力考試B級(jí)的考點(diǎn)：it is no use/good/point doing sth.并舉一反三地進(jìn)行練習(xí)：it is no use trying to persuade him to give up smoking./It is no use arguing with him，he won’t take your advice./it is no use buying him such an expensive gift.
在“Health”單元的講解中，可利用警句Health is not valued till sickness comes.（病時(shí)方知健康可貴）鞏固not..until的結(jié)構(gòu)。
在“family”單元的熱身環(huán)節(jié)中，可導(dǎo)入朗朗上口的諺語：East or West，Home is the best.（金窩銀窩，不如自家的草窩）。通過學(xué)習(xí)這句諺語，我校的一些學(xué)生還在英語文化節(jié)寢室話劇中就活學(xué)活用，喊出了East or West，Snow White is the best.這種壓韻式的口號(hào)就是學(xué)生創(chuàng)新的體現(xiàn)。
三、寓文化素質(zhì)教育于語言教學(xué)之中
語言是文化的載體，了解西方文化，吸取其精華是英語教學(xué)目的的一個(gè)方面。學(xué)習(xí)英語不能脫離英語文化，英語文化是英語正確得體的基礎(chǔ)。我們學(xué)習(xí)英語，不僅要比較兩種語言，還要比較兩種語言所扎根的文化。而格言、警句和諺語是與民族特定的歷史、經(jīng)濟(jì)、生活、風(fēng)俗習(xí)慣等有著密切關(guān)系，透過英語格言警句諺語的表層，可了解它所承載的文化背景，感受中西文化的差異。
如：love me，love my dog.此諺語的表面意思是：“你若愛我的話，必須連我的狗一起愛”。因?yàn)槲鞣饺硕嘤叙B(yǎng)寵物的習(xí)慣，尤以狗為甚。也就是說，如果你愛一個(gè)人，就必須愛屬于他的一切。而漢語中的烏鴉帶有“不吉利”之意，“愛屋及烏”的意思是如果愛一個(gè)人，就必須連他的缺點(diǎn)也一起愛。學(xué)過“every dog has his day.”（時(shí)來運(yùn)轉(zhuǎn)）進(jìn)而了解dog一詞在英語中毫無貶義。再如：Do Roman as in Roman.如果了解這個(gè)諺語的背景，我們就不難翻譯“入鄉(xiāng)隨俗”了。又如習(xí)得“Every Jack must have his Jill”（人各有偶）中，Jack和Jill分別代表男子和女子，就不難解釋或翻譯下面的句子：She is already 38，but she still hasn’t found her Jack.
英語中有數(shù)以萬計(jì)的格言、警句和諺語，其主要特點(diǎn)是言簡(jiǎn)意賅，用日常生活中的具體事例來說明帶有普遍意義的道理。在英語教學(xué)中，教師若能恰到好處地運(yùn)用英語格言警句及諺語，不僅有利于提高學(xué)生的學(xué)習(xí)興趣和語言素養(yǎng)，而且有利于培養(yǎng)學(xué)生的欣賞能力和表達(dá)能力。傳統(tǒng)意義上的語法教學(xué)僅局限于課文中的理解和運(yùn)用，有一定的局限性，不利于對(duì)學(xué)生潛能的挖掘。利用格言警句和諺語進(jìn)行教學(xué)既可以拓展學(xué)生的視野、增進(jìn)知識(shí)，也可以培養(yǎng)學(xué)生對(duì)語言的理解能力，尤其能促進(jìn)對(duì)漢語和英語兩種不同語言的理解和駕馭能力，并促進(jìn)實(shí)際運(yùn)用能力。語言的功能在于交際，交際的兩個(gè)主要方面是理解（他人）和表達(dá)（自己）。表達(dá)能力的高低與語言信息的輸入量和儲(chǔ)存量有著密切的關(guān)系。同樣，熟讀和記憶大量的英語學(xué)習(xí)材料對(duì)于英語學(xué)習(xí)者來說也是很有必要的。
總之，在日常英語教學(xué)過程中我們要根據(jù)實(shí)際大膽創(chuàng)新，找出一條適合于自己教育教學(xué)的方法來挖掘?qū)W生的潛能，英語格言警句和諺語教學(xué)便是一個(gè)很好的嘗試。不過我們也要運(yùn)用得合理恰當(dāng)，切合實(shí)際。相信利用好這一教學(xué)方法也會(huì)達(dá)到“One stone，two birds”（一石二鳥）的作用。
